Hello New Zealand!

Around march of this year I had a meeting with my professor on a plan for my internship as part of my masterstudies. By the end of May it was decided that I would join the research at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand.
After a lot of paperwork and trouble with getting my Visa I was able to leave The Netherlands on the 12th of September for a 26 hour journey via Singapore to Christchurch. It was very tiresome as I skipped two nights because I did not get any sleep on the airplane.
In the morning on september 14th I arrived in Christchurch. After a scenic bus ride through the city I arrived at the Jailhouse hostel where I have stayed until the 21st.
So far I have had a lot of new and cool experiences. I could write a long story about all those things but to give you an idea:
- Flying of the New Zealand Alps and see the mountains go over into the Canterbury plains
- Going directly from summer (in NL) to winter (in NZ)
- Staying at the hostel meeting a lot of new people
- Having to wear a compulsory bike helmet
- Driving on the left side of the road
- My UC professor lending me one of his bikes
- Watching The Lord of the Rings and looking at the landscape getting eager to visit these places
- Having a massive jetlag
- Finding a new room at 59a Ilam road, next to the University.
- Living with some Kiwi's
- Meeting other people at the university
- Getting started on my internship
- Visiting the student bar The Foundry
- Having a BBQ out on the sundeck outside the lab
- Quick weather changes
- Take a walk around the Botanical Gardens (Can't wait to see what it looks like when in is in bloom in spring)
- Visiting the Canterbury museum with great exhibitions on the history of New Zealand and an inpressive room on the earthquakes.
- Visiting the ocean at Sumner, Lyttleton and New Brighton by bus and bike
- Seeing all the devastation that the earthquakes have caused, especially in the inner city
- Getting used to the New Zealand accent
- Going up to Mt Hutt with some fellow researchers for snowboarding down the mountain
- Travelling to Kaikoura for the beautiful views, a walk along the rocks and to see the seal colony and to visit a waterfall when seal pups play
- Making plans for seeing much more of New Zealand.
This has only been the first 15 days and so far I am amazed and impressed by all that I have seen and done. Looking forward to everything that is to come!

Eindelijk horen we iets van je! :P Gezellig plekje dat jailhouse hotel... Al veel dingen gedaan als ik het zo zie, hopelijk blijf je daar tijd voor houden tijdens de rest van je stage! Blijf je blog in ieder geval lezen!

Beste Eelco, leuk om via deze site je belevenissen te volgen. Wat een prachtig land zeg! En die foto met die baby walvissen! Zo maak je eens iets mee!
Hier in Valkenswaard gaat alles gewoon door. De herfst begint nu, de dagen worden korter en t gaat frisser worden. Heel veel plezier en we volgen graag je avonturen! Theo en Inge
